Democratic Party

The Democratic Party (Partia Demokratike, PD) is a center-right, conservative-liberal political party in Albania. As the first opposition party following the collapse of communism, it historically represents the break from dictatorship, integration with the West, and the establishment of a market economy.

Values and Worldview

The PD's foundation rests on the pillars of anti-communism and individual liberty. It sees itself as a civic force, viewing the state as a service provider and protector of private property. Its worldview is strongly shaped by a pro-Western orientation, consistently aligning Albania's national sovereignty with Euro-Atlantic integration. While emphasizing traditional values, the party simultaneously positions itself as a driving force for the country's modernization along Western lines.

Policy Priorities

The PD's agenda centers on economic liberalization, tax reductions, and dismantling bureaucratic hurdles to foster entrepreneurship. It primarily targets the urban middle class, intellectuals, and former victims of the communist regime. A core promise is the uncompromising fight against corruption and strengthening the rule of law to accelerate the country's readiness for European Union accession. Support for the agricultural sector through subsidies also plays a significant role in their appeal to voters.

Role in the Political System

Strategically, the PD acts as the central pole of the conservative bloc and the primary rival to the Socialists. It presents itself as a guardian of democratic institutions, yet during periods of political polarization, it also employs extra-parliamentary means, such as protests, to exert pressure on the government. Its stance on the rule of law is characterized by a demand for an independent judiciary, while simultaneously appealing to the international community as an arbiter in Albania's internal political competition.
