The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) was founded in 1918 and is one of the oldest communist parties in the world. It advocates for social justice, the rights of the working class, and overcoming capitalism. Although it has not been represented in the National Council at the federal level since 1959, it has gained significance in some federal states, especially in Styria. In Graz, the second-largest city in Austria, the KPÖ has held the office of mayor since 2021 and is actively involved in social issues.
The KPÖ was founded on November 3, 1918, as the Communist Party of German-Austria and is thus one of the oldest communist parties in the world. Its foundation occurred in the context of the political upheavals after World War I and the October Revolution in Russia. In the early years, the KPÖ tried to gain influence through coup attempts, which were unsuccessful. From 1924 onwards, the party oriented itself more strongly towards the Bolshevist ideology of the Soviet communists.
During World War II, the KPÖ was a major carrier of the Austrian resistance against National Socialism and clearly committed to the continuity of Austria. After 1945, the KPÖ was allowed as the third party by the Allies alongside the ÖVP and SPÖ, forming a multi-party government until 1947. During this time, the KPÖ was represented in the National Council but lost significance at the federal level from 1959 onwards.
In recent years, the KPÖ has gained importance, especially at the regional level. Particularly noteworthy is its success in Graz, the second-largest city in Austria, where it has held the office of mayor since 2021. The KPÖ is actively engaged in social issues there, advocates for affordable housing, and has gained the trust of many citizens through its policies. Nationwide, the party holds over 130 mandates at the state, municipal, and district levels.
We surveyed voters across all parties within the PolitPro community about their stances on key political issues. The bars illustrate the range of opinions among KPÖ supporters. A shorter bar indicates a more homogeneous opinion among supporters. Where available, the party's official position is displayed as a circle.
These values are derived from data provided by KPÖ supporters on the PolitPro platform. While this data is not a traditional representative random sample, the high number of participants provides deep insights into the priorities and values of the active voter base.
