The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) is one of the oldest and most significant political parties in Austria. Founded in 1889, it represents social democratic values such as freedom, equality, justice, and solidarity. The SPÖ advocates for social justice, equal opportunities, and the interests of workers, youth, and pensioners. It has been represented multiple times in the Austrian federal government and currently forms the state government in some federal states.
The SPÖ was founded in 1889 as the Social Democratic Workers' Party and is thus one of the oldest parties in Austria. After World War II, it played a crucial role in the reconstruction of the country, and it has repeatedly provided the Chancellor, including Bruno Kreisky from 1970 to 1983. During this time, numerous social reforms were implemented that shaped Austria. The party experienced ups and downs but remained a central force in Austrian politics.
The SPÖ stands for social democratic values such as freedom, equality, justice, and solidarity. It advocates for social justice, equal opportunities, and the interests of workers, youth, and pensioners. Current focal points include combating inflation, affordable housing, fair tax policy, and the expansion of the welfare state. Additionally, the SPÖ is committed to a strong public healthcare system and educational institutions.
Since June 2023, the SPÖ has been led by Andreas Babler. Under his leadership, the party strives to strengthen its social democratic roots and position itself as a progressive force in Austria. In the 2024 National Council election, the SPÖ achieved 21.1 percent of the votes, its worst result to date. Despite this setback, the party is working to solidify its position in Austrian politics and implement its goals.
We surveyed voters across all parties within the PolitPro community about their stances on key political issues. The bars illustrate the range of opinions among SPÖ supporters. A shorter bar indicates a more homogeneous opinion among supporters. Where available, the party's official position is displayed as a circle.
These values are derived from data provided by SPÖ supporters on the PolitPro platform. While this data is not a traditional representative random sample, the high number of participants provides deep insights into the priorities and values of the active voter base.
