The MR's foundation is classical liberalism. The party views the individual as central to society and distrusts an overreaching state apparatus. Its worldview is shaped by the conviction that personal freedom and economic success are inextricably linked. The state should merely provide the framework for competition and security, while social mobility is to be achieved through merit and education rather than redistribution. Within the Belgian state structure, the MR firmly positions itself as pro-Belgian and rejects separatist tendencies.
The agenda focuses on tax cuts, deregulation, and labor market flexibility to strengthen competitiveness. The party specifically targets entrepreneurs, freelancers, and the working middle class. A central point of contention is energy policy, where the MR frequently advocates for a pragmatic use of nuclear power. Socially, it champions progressive values such as self-determination, yet combines these with a restrictive migration and security policy to uphold public order.
Strategically, the MR acts as a governing force and the most significant liberal counterweight to socialist parties in southern Belgium. It sees itself as a guardian of institutions and the rule of law, defending economic rationality against populist demands. Due to its flexibility in coalition matters, it often plays a key role in federal government formation. The greatest challenge remains the balancing act between adherence to liberal principles and the necessary compromises within Belgium's complex consensus democracy.
