The PVDA/PTB's worldview is rooted in a fundamental critique of the capitalist system, which it identifies as the cause of social injustice and ecological crises. The party strives for a society where the means of production are collectively controlled. Its view of humanity is collectivist: the protection of the working class from exploitation by corporations is central. It currently perceives the state as an instrument of the elites, which must be transformed into a social actor through massive pressure from grassroots movements and parliamentary work.
The party's agenda focuses on the radical redistribution of wealth through high wealth taxes and the nationalization of strategic sectors, such as energy supply. Core demands include lowering the retirement age, increasing wages, and massive investments in social housing. The party primarily targets the working class, those in precarious employment, and young activists. A unique selling point is its "Unitarism": it rejects the current form of Belgian federalism and actively campaigns against the country's division along linguistic lines.
Strategically, the PVDA/PTB operates as an "anti-establishment party," utilizing the parliamentary system as a platform to fuel extra-parliamentary protest. Its relationship with institutions is ambivalent: while it respects democratic rules, it fundamentally questions the economic order underpinning the rule of law. In Belgian politics, it often acts as a corrective force from the left, putting pressure on established social democrats. Its strict bilingualism gives it a unique position, challenging Belgium's increasingly fragmented political landscape.
