The party's foundation is Flemish nationalism, encapsulated by the motto 'Eigen Volk Eerst' (Our Own People First). Its worldview is shaped by an ethno-pluralist understanding, centering on the preservation of Flemish identity and culture. The Belgian state is rejected as an artificial construct that impedes Flanders' development. Its humanistic perspective is conservative-traditional, with a strong emphasis on internal security and the preservation of Christian-Western values.
The party's agenda focuses on Flemish sovereignty and a radical shift in immigration and integration policies. It advocates for the deportation of foreign nationals convicted of crimes and a zero-tolerance approach to crime. Economically, it pursues a protectionist line, aiming to reserve social welfare primarily for its own population ('welfare chauvinism'). It specifically targets workers, the middle class, and people in rural areas who feel overlooked by the political establishment and globalization.
Strategically, the party operates as a fundamental opposition force, challenging the political establishment. While officially adhering to the rule of law, critics accuse it of pushing the boundaries of democratic discourse through populist rhetoric. Its role within the Belgian system is paradoxical: despite significant electoral successes, it remains isolated by the informal 'Cordon Sanitaire' – the pledge by all other parties not to form a coalition with it – which it, in turn, leverages to portray itself as the only true alternative to the system.
