The HSS is founded on the ideology of agrarianism, which views the peasantry as the moral and economic backbone of society. Its worldview is shaped by the concept of the "Peasant Republic" – a synthesis of grassroots democracy, pacifist principles, and social justice. The party propagates a humanistic view of humanity, linking individual freedom with responsibility for the community and the preservation of natural resources. The protection of Croatian traditions and land is considered a sacred duty of the state.
In its political practice, the HSS focuses on the revitalization of rural areas. It advocates for substantial investments in domestic agriculture, the protection of small farmers from global agribusiness corporations, and a consistent green transformation of the economy. Its agenda primarily targets residents outside urban centers, environmentalists, and value-conservative citizens. The party actively opposes the centralization of power in Zagreb and champions decentralization, aiming to grant local communities greater financial autonomy and self-governance.
Strategically, the HSS serves as a pragmatic corrective force within the Croatian political landscape. As one of the country's oldest political organizations, it leverages its historical legitimacy to mediate between the major political blocs, often selecting coalition partners based on their support for agrarian policy goals. It operates within the rule of law but frequently calls for a stronger ethical foundation for institutions. Despite its long history, in the modern era, it strives to reconcile its core rural identity with the demands of a globalized EU membership.
