AKEL's foundation is rooted in Marxist-Leninist ideology, which it has, however, adapted over decades to parliamentary realities. Its worldview is shaped by class struggle and the solidarity of the working class. A central pillar is "Cypriotism": AKEL sees itself as a cross-communal force aiming to unite both Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot workers. The state is viewed as a key actor responsible for guaranteeing social justice and curbing imperialist influences – particularly those stemming from Western military alliances.
AKEL's agenda centers on a robust welfare state, strong workers' rights, and the redistribution of wealth. The party advocates for high minimum wages, affordable housing, and the nationalization of strategic key sectors. Its core constituency includes the working class, alongside progressive segments of the middle class. In foreign policy, AKEL maintains a skeptical stance towards NATO and champions a demilitarized, neutral island. A defining characteristic remains its focus on dialogue with the Turkish-Cypriot community to overcome the island's division.
Strategically, AKEL plays a dual role: it is both a system-critical opposition and a responsible governing force. Despite its revolutionary origins, it operates strictly within the framework of a democratic rule of law and has seen its members serve as President on multiple occasions. The tension arises from its relationship with the EU: while critically viewing integration as a neoliberal project, AKEL remains pragmatically active within its institutions. It serves as a stable counterweight to the conservative bloc and ensures the embedding of left-wing discourse within Cypriot society.
