The bedrock of ELAM's ideology is an ethno-nationalist worldview that defines the Greek identity of Cyprus as sacrosanct. The party perceives the Cypriot people as a community bound by shared destiny, whose continued existence is threatened by external influences. Its understanding of the state is authoritarian, primarily serving to safeguard national homogeneity and preserve traditional, Orthodox Christian values. A central tenet is the outright rejection of multiculturalism.
ELAM's political agenda is centered on a stringent anti-immigration policy and an unwavering rejection of any federal solution to the Cyprus conflict. The party advocates for a unitary state under Greek Cypriot leadership. Economically, it employs populist strategies aimed at protecting the 'common man' from international institutions and banks. Its target demographic primarily includes young voters, those disillusioned with the established political system, and conservative factions demanding a tougher approach towards the Turkish Cypriot side and in asylum policy.
Strategically, ELAM operates as an anti-establishment force, positioning itself as the sole 'clean' alternative to a perceived corrupt elite. While engaging within parliamentary institutions, it employs provocative rhetoric to push the boundaries of political discourse. Its relationship with the rule of law is ambivalent: it champions 'law and order' but questions liberal democratic processes when they are deemed to contradict national interests. Through its professionalization, ELAM has evolved from an extra-parliamentary movement into a significant and stable player within the Cypriot party system.
