The party's foundation is built upon the vision of a classless society. Enhedslisten emerged as an alliance of various left-wing currents and sees itself as a collective movement against social inequality. Its ethos is shaped by solidarity and the conviction that economic power must be democratized. The state is viewed as a tool to decouple basic necessities from market forces and to radically advance redistribution from the top down.
The party's agenda focuses on a robust expansion of the Danish welfare state and an uncompromising ecological transformation. It advocates for higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy to fund education and healthcare. Its target audience includes low-income earners, the unemployed, young climate activists, and the precarious workforce. A central tension remains its critical stance on the EU, which it rejects as a neoliberal project, while simultaneously championing international solidarity.
Strategically, the party acts as a left-wing corrective and frequently serves as a kingmaker for Social Democratic-led governments. This involves a constant balancing act: on one hand, it aims to achieve tangible improvements for its voters, while on the other, its base demands a fundamental critique of the system. Despite its revolutionary origins, it now operates strictly within parliamentary institutions, yet advocates for stronger direct democracy and the curbing of private capital interests.
