The SF's foundation is built upon modern democratic socialism, which inextricably links individual liberty with collective solidarity. Their philosophy is rooted in the conviction that social background should not determine one's life trajectory. In their vision, the state acts as a robust social safety net, guaranteeing education, healthcare, and prosperity for all. A central pillar of their ideology is eco-socialism: the SF views the fight against climate change as a class issue, as ecological crises often disproportionately affect the most vulnerable segments of society.
The party's agenda focuses on expanding the welfare state, increasing investments in childcare and education, and implementing progressive tax policies. The SF primarily targets the urban middle class, public sector employees, and young people. A unique selling point is its ambitious environmental policy, which aims to significantly accelerate the green transition without compromising social equity. It advocates for stronger regulation of financial markets and champions a humane, yet legally sound, migration policy that prioritizes integration over exclusion.
Within the Danish parliamentary system, the SF acts as a crucial bridge-builder within the left-wing bloc. While once primarily a protest party, it has evolved into a governing-capable force, willing to compromise to achieve tangible political change. It frequently supports Social Democratic-led minority governments, yet consistently maintains its profile as the ecological conscience. Despite its historically EU-critical roots, it now advocates a pro-European course, albeit one that champions a social Europe extending beyond mere market interests.
