The EER's foundation is an eco-centric worldview: the preservation of natural resources takes precedence over short-term profit interests. The party views the state as a protector of both the environment and civil liberties. Its vision of humanity is shaped by individual responsibility and social justice, seeing technological innovation as key to tackling the climate crisis. It strives for a society that defines prosperity not by resource consumption, but by quality of life.
The EER's agenda focuses on phasing out oil shale energy – Estonia's largest CO2 emitter – and a massive expansion of renewable energy sources. It advocates for an ecological tax reform and the protection of Estonian forests from overexploitation. Socially, it champions liberal civil liberties, marriage equality, and the introduction of a universal basic income. Its target audience includes young, urban voters, environmental activists, and citizens who find established parties too slow to act on climate issues.
Within the Estonian party system, the EER acts as an external programmatic agenda-setter. Although it often struggles to gain parliamentary representation, it shapes public discourse through extra-parliamentary work and citizen initiatives. It sees itself as a corrective to the economic-liberal mainstream and advocates for more direct democracy through referendums. Its relationship with state institutions is driven by the goal of deeply embedding ecological standards in the constitution and legal framework.
