The foundation of Vasemmistoliitto rests on the pillars of democratic socialism and ecofeminism. The party views the market as an instrument requiring strict state control to prevent the exploitation of both people and nature. Its worldview is deeply humanistic: every individual, regardless of origin or wealth, should have equal opportunities for self-realization. It sees a robust welfare state not as a burden, but as a necessary guarantor of freedom and collective solidarity.
The agenda focuses on wealth redistribution and the consistent expansion of public services. The party advocates for higher taxes on capital gains to fund education and healthcare. Its target audience ranges from the traditional working class and precarious workers to urban academics demanding systemic change in climate policy. Vasemmistoliitto also acts as a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and humane asylum policies, positioning itself at the most progressive end of the Finnish political spectrum.
Within Finland's political system, the Left Alliance often functions as the social conscience and a corrective element in centre-left coalitions. Strategically, the party navigates the delicate balance between governmental responsibility and extra-parliamentary activism. While fully endorsing the democratic institutions of the rule of law, it advocates for the democratization of the economy. Internationally, it maintains a skeptical stance towards military alliances, instead emphasizing the importance of civilian crisis prevention and global disarmament.
