The party's foundation is political ecology, which views the protection of the biosphere as a prerequisite for human freedom. Their worldview is shaped by the recognition of ecological limits and a skepticism towards unlimited economic growth. They pursue a humanistic ethos based on participation, decentralization, and global solidarity. In this context, the state is understood not merely as a regulatory power, but as a shaper of socio-ecological transformation that strengthens local self-governance and prioritizes ecological responsibility over national sovereignty.
The party's agenda focuses on a consistent phase-out of nuclear power, a massive expansion of renewable energies, and a green agricultural transition. Socially, they advocate for a redistribution of wealth and working hours, alongside robust protection for vulnerable groups against the impacts of climate change. Their target audience primarily includes urban, educated demographics and young voters. A central tension remains the reconciliation of ecological regulations with acceptance in rural areas, while they position themselves as advocates for minority rights and a humane migration policy.
Within the French system, Les Écologistes act as a driving force for institutional reforms, such as the transition to a Sixth Republic with a greater share of direct democracy. Strategically, they often oscillate between the role of junior partner in left-wing government coalitions and an independent, more radical opposition course. While passionately advocating for European institutions, they criticize their market-liberal orientation. Their relationship with the rule of law is constructive, as they consider civil society protest and civil disobedience legitimate means of political engagement.
