The foundation of the PCF rests on the conviction that social justice can only be achieved by transcending capitalism and the pursuit of maximum profit. Its worldview is shaped by the idea of collective emancipation and a robust state as a guarantor of the common good. Unlike many other left-wing currents, the PCF maintains a strong commitment to industrial production and the ideal of full employment. It views individuals not as competitors in the market, but as integral parts of a solidarity-driven community whose fundamental needs must be secured through public services.
The PCF's agenda centers on a massive redistribution of wealth, a significant increase in the minimum wage, and the expansion of the welfare state. A distinctive feature within the left-wing spectrum is its clear commitment to nuclear energy as a means to achieve energy sovereignty and combat climate change. The party champions policies for the "ordinary people," industrial workers, and public service employees. In economic policy, it advocates for the nationalization of key industries and banks to curb the power of financial markets and prioritize investments in education and healthcare.
Strategically, the PCF navigates a delicate balance between preserving its ideological distinctiveness and the necessary coalition-building within the French Left. While respecting the institutions of the Republic, it advocates for their democratization to minimize the influence of special interest groups. Despite the decline of its former mass appeal, its strong local presence and ties to trade unions ensure it remains an influential force. It often acts as a social counterweight, introducing more radical demands into parliamentary debate without departing from the principles of the rule of law.
