The RN's foundation rests on the concept of 'national preference' (préférence nationale), advocating for citizens to be systematically prioritized over foreigners. Its worldview is characterized by a strong central state and a rejection of multiculturalism. The party views the nation as a community of shared destiny, whose identity is threatened by globalization and supranationalism. While it previously presented itself as radically reactionary, it now attempts to portray itself as a mainstream force championing 'sovereignism,' without abandoning its core focus on preserving a homogeneous national culture.
The party's agenda focuses on a drastic reduction in immigration, the expansion of police powers, and the protection of domestic industries through protectionist measures. Economically, the party occupies a specific social niche: it promises to preserve the welfare state and lower the cost of living, but advocates for these benefits primarily for French citizens. This strategy specifically targets the working class, rural voters, and those who feel marginalized by globalization. In foreign policy, it seeks to repatriate EU competencies to Paris to regain national autonomy.
Strategically, the party has pursued 'de-demonization' (dédiabolisation) for years to shed its image as a far-right fringe force and appear fit to govern. While operating within democratic institutions, it advocates for a systemic overhaul towards more direct democracy through referendums, often to bypass existing laws or EU treaties. The tension lies in its relationship with the rule of law: critics accuse it of undermining fundamental principles of equality, while the party itself positions itself as a defender of 'true' democracy against an out-of-touch elite.
