The Urban. A HipHop Party is a small party founded in Berlin in 2017 that translates the values of hip-hop culture into politics. It advocates for social justice, anti-racism, decolonization, and environmental protection. Its goals include the introduction of a universal basic income, the legalization of cannabis, and withdrawal from NATO. So far, the party has not been able to win mandates in parliaments.
Origin and Background
The Urban. A HipHop Party was founded on May 1, 2017, in Berlin. It arose from the desire to bring the values and experiences of hip-hop culture into the political structures of Germany. The party sees itself as the political arm of the subculture and aims to create a society that clearly stands against racism and discrimination. It emphasizes that cultural diversity is what life is about and advocates for a better future for Black people and People of Color in Germany.
Goals and Demands
The party demands the fight against environmental pollution, the expansion of renewable energies, and the promotion of local public transport and long-distance travel. It advocates for equality and rejects discrimination based on ancestry, religion, language, nationality, or gender. Its social demands include the introduction of a universal basic income, a 32-hour workweek for working parents, and a unified health and long-term care insurance for all people living in Germany. Furthermore, the party supports the legalization of cannabis and opposes arms exports as well as foreign deployments of the Bundeswehr.
Election Results and Political Presence
Since its founding, The Urban has participated in several elections but so far has not won mandates in parliaments. In the 2017 federal election, it ran for the first time and received 0.2% of the second votes in Berlin. In the 2021 federal election, the party received 17,861 votes nationwide, corresponding to 0.0%. Even in state elections, such as in Berlin in 2021 and North Rhine-Westphalia in 2022, the results ranged from 0.1% to 0.2%. Despite these low election results, the party remains active and continues to engage in its political goals.
Structure and Members
The Urban places great importance on diversity and representation. According to its statutes, more than 50% of the board consists of BIPoC members and more than 50% of people who are not cisgender men. At a party convention in November 2020, a new board was elected that reflects these principles. The party emphasizes that it is not only open to hip-hoppers but to anyone who can identify with its values. It sees itself as part of a movement that seeks social change through creativity and the values of hip-hop culture.
