Group in the European Parliament
Alliance 90/The Greens, short the Greens, is a German political party that advocates for environmental protection, social justice, and a sustainable economy. Founded in 1980, it emerged from the environmental and peace movement. The Greens emphasize the expansion of renewable energies, climate protection, and the promotion of equality. With around 130,000 members, they are among the larger parties in Germany.
Origins and Founding
The Greens were founded in 1980 in West Germany and emerged from various social movements, including the environmental, peace, and women's movements. Their goal was to bring ecological and social issues into politics. After the reunification of Germany, they merged in 1993 with the East German civil rights movement Alliance 90 and have since operated as Alliance 90/The Greens.
Political Goals and Focus Areas
The Greens advocate for environmental protection, the expansion of renewable energies, and climate protection. They promote social justice, gender equality, and a sustainable economy. They also advocate for a peaceful foreign policy and the strengthening of democracy. A central concern is ecological, economic, and social sustainability.
Significance and Influence
Since the 1980s, the Greens have established themselves as a stable political force in Germany. They have been part of coalition governments at both the federal and state levels multiple times. In the 2021 federal election, they achieved 14.8% of the votes and became part of the federal government in a coalition with the SPD and FDP. At the European level, they are a member of the European Green Party and advocate for a united and ecological Europe.

What do the charts show?
We asked voters of all parties in the PolitPro community about their positions on different political issues. The bars show the range of opinions among party supporters. The shorter the bar, the more similar the views of the party’s voters on that issue. If available, we also show the party’s position derived from research as a circle.
Where does the data come from?
The data is based on self-assessments from party supporters in the PolitPro community. It is not representative of the entire population, but it still gives a solid overview of which issues matter most to party supporters.
