Volt Germany was founded on March 3, 2018, as part of the pan-European movement Volt Europa. The founding was a response to the increasing nationalism and populism in Europe, especially after the Brexit referendum. Volt sees itself as a European party that is active in several countries and pursues common goals.

The party is classified as social-liberal, progressive, and European-federalist. Volt advocates for a deepening of European integration and aims to create a European federation. Central topics include climate protection, digitization, social justice, and the promotion of diversity and tolerance.

In the 2019 European elections, Volt Germany received 0.7% of the votes, which allowed Damian Boeselager to enter the European Parliament. In the following years, the party was able to achieve successes at the local level, particularly in cities like Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt am Main. In the 2024 European elections, Volt Germany increased its share of the votes to 2.6% and won three seats in the European Parliament.

Volt Germany has several thousand members who organize themselves in local teams and regional associations. The party values a grassroots democratic structure and promotes the active involvement of its members in decision-making processes. Through its pan-European orientation, Volt works closely with the other national branches of Volt Europa.
