The party's foundation rests on social justice and state sovereignty against global financial markets. Its worldview is collectivist: prosperity is achieved through strong public institutions and fair redistribution. At its core, the party is driven by the conviction that the Greek state can only fulfill its social protection function through active market intervention and maintaining national infrastructure under public ownership. It combines modern progressive social policies with a traditional focus on state autonomy.
The party's agenda focuses on a significant expansion of the welfare state, higher minimum wages, and the protection of workers' rights. Its primary target groups include the urban working class, young academics in precarious employment, and pensioners. The party advocates for a radical taxation of high wealth and substantial investments in green energy self-sufficiency. A central point of tension remains its relationship with the EU: while it supports the European idea, it categorically rejects strict fiscal rules from Brussels and Frankfurt to gain national policy leeway.
Strategically, the party positions itself as a corrective force against the neoliberal consensus. It operates within the parliamentary framework but frequently employs populist rhetoric to challenge the 'establishment'. Its relationship with the rule of law is marked by skepticism towards a judiciary it often perceives as an extension of the elites. It seeks systemic change through grassroots mobilization and parliamentary obstruction against privatization projects, making it a difficult, yet often indispensable coalition partner.
