The FrP's worldview is rooted in classical liberalism, paired with a pronounced distrust of government overreach. At its core is the sovereignty of the individual over the collective. The party views the state primarily as a service provider that should limit itself to core functions. National pride and the defense of Western values form its cultural foundation, with the FrP adopting a skeptical stance towards supranational institutions and seeing direct democracy, inspired by the Swiss model, as an ideal.
The FrP's agenda aims for a radical streamlining of the welfare state, coupled with a massive reinvestment of oil revenues into infrastructure and healthcare. It advocates for the privatization of state-owned enterprises and a reduction in bureaucracy. A core concern is the strict limitation of immigration and a consistent obligation for integration. The party primarily appeals to workers, the self-employed, and citizens in rural areas who feel burdened by high taxes and demand a pragmatic 'Norway First' policy.
Within Norwegian parliamentarism, the FrP has carved out a role as a system-critical challenger, evolving over decades from an outsider to a viable governing force. It acts as a corrective to the established consensus of center-right parties, often pushing them towards a tougher stance on immigration policy. Despite its populist rhetoric, it operates firmly within democratic institutions, deliberately leveraging these to diminish the influence of expert councils and bureaucratic bodies in favor of direct political decision-making power.
