Rødt's foundation is rooted in Marxism and the pursuit of a classless society. The party views economic inequality not as an accident, but as a systemic problem inherent in a capitalist state. Its conception of humanity is collectivist: true freedom, for them, only emerges through liberation from economic constraints. The party sees the state and nation as instruments currently serving the elites, but which must be transformed through a democratic revolution to serve the working class.
Rødt's agenda centers on a massive expansion of the welfare state, the nationalization of key industries, and a concerted fight against 'profit maximization in social services.' The party advocates for radical tax increases on high net worth individuals and champions a strict ecological transformation that, crucially, must not burden the working class. Its target audience includes low-income earners, trade union members, and young idealists who criticize established left-wing parties for their perceived pragmatic course. In foreign policy, Rødt strictly rejects NATO membership and the EEA Agreement.
Within Norway's political system, Rødt functions as an ideological corrective and a 'watchdog' to the left of the Social Democrats. Strategically, the party utilizes parliament as a platform to push for system-critical debates and exert pressure on left-leaning minority governments, all while avoiding the compromises that come with fixed coalitions. While it uses the institutions of the rule of law, its relationship with the existing system remains ambivalent, as it ultimately seeks a radical break with the current economic order.
