The foundation of the CDS-PP is rooted in Christian social doctrine and classical conservatism. Central to its worldview is the conviction that the state must serve the organic structures of society – particularly the family and local communities – rather than patronizing them. They defend the right to private property and view the market as a driver of prosperity, yet simultaneously call for a moral compass in politics. Their understanding of the nation is shaped by pride in Portuguese history and a skeptical stance towards excessive centralization by Brussels.
The party's agenda focuses on tax relief, reducing bureaucracy, and strengthening the private sector. It advocates for freedom of choice in education and healthcare to dismantle state monopolies. Its core demands include a more restrictive immigration policy, as well as the promotion of rural areas and agriculture. The CDS-PP primarily targets entrepreneurs, devout Christians, farmers, and value-conservative middle-class citizens. On social policy issues, it often adopts a clear pro-life stance and generally opposes the progressive expansion of liberal reforms concerning ethical matters.
Within the Portuguese party system, the CDS-PP traditionally serves as a strategic junior partner for the larger centre-right forces, enabling stable majorities independent of the left. It occupies the right-of-centre flank, thereby preventing the rise of more populist movements in that space.
