Chega's ideology is rooted in authoritarian conservatism and a pronounced nationalism. The party emphasizes Portugal's sovereignty and traditional values, often positioning itself as the voice of the 'common people' against a perceived corrupt elite. Its view of individuals is characterized by personal responsibility, coupled with a strong state that guarantees security and order. The party believes the state should largely refrain from economic intervention but govern with an iron fist when it comes to internal security and the preservation of national identity.
Chega's agenda is primarily focused on a sweeping overhaul of the justice system, the implementation of tougher penalties, and a staunch opposition to 'political correctness'. The party advocates for strict immigration controls and criticizes the dependency of certain population groups on social welfare benefits. Its target audience largely comprises voters who feel disenfranchised by the traditional political establishment, as well as small business owners and citizens in rural areas. Economically, Chega champions significant tax cuts and the privatization of state-owned services.
Within Portugal's political landscape, Chega operates as an anti-establishment force, challenging the decades-long dominance of socialist and moderate conservative parties. Strategically, the party leverages provocation and polarization to command media attention. While it utilizes formal democratic institutions, Chega often finds itself at odds with the rule of law, as its demands – such as constitutional reforms or a toughening of criminal law – are interpreted by critics as an assault on liberal fundamental values. The party aims to permanently alter the established power dynamics.
