The foundation of the IL is classical liberalism. Its worldview prioritizes the individual and personal responsibility over the collective and the state. It views freedom as indivisible: economic liberty through lower taxes and competition goes hand-in-hand with personal freedom on social issues. The state is seen not as a provider, but as an efficient arbiter that should largely refrain from interfering in private life and the market. Its optimistic view of human nature emphasizes upward mobility through merit rather than state dependency.
The IL's agenda focuses on radical tax simplification, notably advocating for a "Flat Tax," and the privatization of state-owned enterprises. It champions greater freedom of choice in the education and healthcare systems to dismantle state monopolies. Its primary target audience includes young, urban professionals, entrepreneurs, and reform-minded individuals eager to modernize Portugal. On social issues, the party adopts liberal stances, such as the legalization of cannabis and strengthening minority rights, which clearly distinguishes it from the value-conservative camp.
Within Portugal's political landscape, the IL acts as an ideological provocateur, challenging the decades-long consensus of center-left politics. It operates within democratic institutions, leveraging them to pressure the system with pro-market reform proposals. Strategically, it positions itself as a bridge-builder for center-right majorities, without compromising its market-liberal purity. Its goal is to shift the discourse from state redistribution towards wealth creation through private competition.
