The KPRF's foundation is a synthesis of socialist planned economy and a neo-imperial state concept. It views the collapse of the Soviet Union as a catastrophe and strives for a return to a strong, centralized state. Its worldview is collectivist, with the identity of the "Soviet man" complemented by Russian Orthodox values and patriotism. The state is considered the sole guarantor of social justice and national sovereignty against Western influence.

The KPRF advocates for the nationalization of key industries, particularly the raw materials sector, and substantial investments in social welfare programs. It primarily targets those disadvantaged by the post-Soviet transition: pensioners, public sector employees, and rural populations. Beyond economic demands, the party champions conservative causes such as the protection of traditional family values and an assertive foreign policy aimed at restoring Russia's sphere of influence. It positions itself as a bulwark against global liberalism.

Within Russia's political system, the KPRF operates as a "systemic opposition." It channels social protest within state-tolerated boundaries without fundamentally challenging the Kremlin's power structure. While formally operating within parliamentary democracy, its relationship with the rule of law remains ambivalent, as it idealizes the authoritarian structure of the Soviet era. Strategically, it serves the power apparatus as a stabilizing element, binding left-wing and nationalist voters to the state.
