The foundation of the SNS is built upon the 'trinity' of statehood, Christianity, and nation. It views Slovakia as a primarily ethnic community whose sovereignty must be defended against perceived external threats – such as EU centralization – and internal ones – like the Hungarian minority. Its worldview is collectivist: the welfare of the nation takes precedence over individual liberal freedoms, while tradition and history serve as anchors for identity.

The SNS agenda focuses on protectionist economic policies, expanding the welfare state primarily for its core constituency, and a strict rejection of migration and LGBTQ+ rights. It specifically targets conservative voters in rural areas and the working class who view the benefits of globalization with skepticism. A significant point of contention is its geopolitical orientation, which often emphasizes a bridging role with Russia and critically questions Western military alliances such as NATO.

Strategically, the SNS acts as a populist corrective, pushing traditional conservative positions towards radicalism. It often leverages its role as a crucial swing vote in coalitions to embed nationalist narratives within the mainstream discourse. Its relationship with the rule of law is characterized by an instrumental understanding: institutions and media are frequently portrayed as obstacles to the 'will of the people,' regularly leading to tensions with European democratic standards.
