It advocates for prioritizing Slovenian citizens in all social and economic matters and supports withdrawal from the Schengen Area or even the European Union. Its primary target audience includes voters in rural regions and citizens who feel alienated by globalization and the prevailing liberal zeitgeist. Economically, the party often champions protectionist measures to shield domestic businesses from international competition.

Within Slovenia's political system, the SNS functions as a radical voice on the far-right. Its strategy relies on provocation and a deliberate rejection of 'political correctness' to garner media attention. While officially committed to the rule of law, it often acts as a critic of the system, questioning the independence of international courts or institutions when they conflict with national interests. In coalition negotiations, it is considered a difficult partner, yet it occasionally serves as a kingmaker to inject nationalist elements into legislation.
