The party's foundation is rooted in "Abertzale" left-wing nationalism: the conviction that the Basque people possess an inherent right to self-determination and sovereign statehood. Its worldview blends radical grassroots democracy with socialist ideals. The party rejects the state as a centralized power emanating from Madrid, instead envisioning its re-establishment as an independent Basque Republic. In doing so, Bildu emphasizes collective identity, the fostering of the Basque language (Euskara), and an anti-fascist ethos as its moral compass.
Bildu's agenda aims for a comprehensive societal transformation. The party advocates for the nationalization of strategic sectors, higher minimum wages, and a robust expansion of the welfare state. Its core constituency includes the working class, young activists, and the rural populations of the Basque Country and Navarre. A central tenet remains "normalization": this encompasses the repatriation of Basque prisoners and addressing the legacy of the armed conflict, with the party now consistently employing peaceful, parliamentary means to achieve independence.
Strategically, Bildu acts as a left-leaning counterweight and a significant political player in the Spanish Parliament. Despite its pro-independence agenda, it often functions as a pragmatic kingmaker for left-wing central governments, aiming to prevent conservative majorities and secure social reforms. This dynamic tension between anti-establishment opposition and mainstream political engagement defines its role. While political opponents accuse the party of insufficient disavowal of its ETA past, Bildu continues to solidify its standing as a credible, disciplined force within Spain's democratic rule of law.
