The BNG's foundation is rooted in the conviction that Galicia is a distinct nation. Its ideology blends classical nationalism with decidedly socialist principles. The party's worldview is collectivist: individual freedom and social prosperity, it argues, can only be achieved within a self-determined Galician state that emancipates itself from Madrid's 'central power.' The state is seen as an instrument for redistribution and for safeguarding cultural identity against the forces of globalization.
The agenda focuses on strengthening Galicia's public sector and significantly expanding its autonomous rights. Key demands include full fiscal autonomy, the promotion of the Galician language in education and administration, and an ecological transition that protects local resources. The party primarily targets the rural population, the working class, and young intellectuals who perceive Galicia as economically disadvantaged compared to the Spanish central government.
Strategically, the BNG operates as a consistent opposition force to the Spanish central state, without ever abandoning the parliamentary path. Within Galicia, the party serves as the primary counterweight to conservative forces. At the national level, it often leverages its mandates as a 'kingmaker' or 'swing vote' to negotiate investments and competencies for its home region in exchange for parliamentary support, all while fundamentally questioning Spain's monarchical system.
