The foundation of the KD is built upon a Christian understanding of humanity and the principle of subsidiarity. The party stresses that the state should not control all aspects of life.
The KD's political agenda heavily emphasizes family policy, with freedom of choice in childcare being a core concern. The party also advocates for an efficient healthcare system, particularly improved elder care, and pursues strict law-and-order policies. Its target demographic includes value-conservative voters, families in rural areas, and those who call for a return to traditional Swedish and Christian norms. On economic matters, the KD supports tax cuts and deregulation to strengthen entrepreneurship.
Within the Swedish party system, the KD serves as a stable anchor in the centre-right bloc. Strategically, in recent years, it has evolved from a religiously-oriented niche party into a more modern, right-conservative force, open to cooperation with the national-conservative spectrum. It acts as a corrective against an overreaching welfare state and defends institutions such as the monarchy and the church. In doing so, it constantly balances the tension between its religious heritage and the realities of a highly modernized society.
