The SD's worldview is rooted in ethnocultural nationalism. It views Swedish identity, language, and tradition as the bedrock of a stable state. Its conception of humanity is shaped by the idea that social cohesion can only be secured long-term through cultural homogeneity. The state is thus conceived as a "People's Home" (Folkhemmet), which must protect its citizens from external influences. This ideology leads to deep skepticism towards multiculturalism, which the party perceives as a threat to social peace.
The SD advocates for a restrictive immigration policy ("zero immigration") and the consistent deportation of foreign nationals who commit crimes. A central concern is the restoration of law and order, particularly combating gang crime. Economically, the party champions welfare nationalism: it supports a robust welfare state but aims to primarily focus its benefits on the native-born population. This approach primarily appeals to the working class, conservative voters in rural areas, and those who feel left behind by globalization.
Long politically isolated, the SD has evolved into a decisive power broker within the Swedish bloc model. They strategically act as a pivot between the traditional right and populist protest movements. While acknowledging formal democratic institutions, they demand stronger national sovereignty vis-à-vis Brussels and criticize liberal elites in media and the judiciary. Their role has fundamentally reshaped the Swedish party system, as they have broken the traditional dominance of the Social Democrats and now dictate the political agenda on security and identity issues.
