The SP's worldview is rooted in solidarity. It views the market not as an end in itself, but as a tool that must serve the common good. Its understanding of humanity is emancipatory: every individual, regardless of origin or wealth, should participate in societal prosperity. The state acts as a protective framework, mitigating social hardship through redistribution and robust public services. The party combines traditional workers' rights with modern progressive values and a clear rejection of a purely nationalistic focus.
The SP's agenda focuses on strengthening purchasing power and expanding social security. Key demands include affordable housing, solidarity-based healthcare funding, and equal pay. It primarily targets the working class, the middle class, and the urban, academically educated population. In environmental policy, the party champions a socially just energy transition, ensuring that ecological costs are not disproportionately borne by lower-income groups. In foreign policy, it advocates for close ties with Europe and an active peace policy.
Within Switzerland's consensus-based political system (Konkordanzsystem), the SP occupies the role of the "left-wing pole" within the government. This dual role, encompassing governmental responsibility in the Federal Council and a simultaneous opposition role through referendums and initiatives, creates an inherent tension. The SP strategically uses direct democratic instruments to champion issues that do not find a majority in parliament. While respectful of institutions, it consistently advocates for legal reform towards greater social inclusion and global accountability.
