Pros - What's in favor?
- Solidarity and responsibility: a quota system ensures that all EU member countries play their part in dealing with the refugee crisis. It is fair that countries with larger populations and resources take on a larger share of the burden of hosting refugees.
- Burden sharing: an even distribution of refugees reduces the burden on individual countries, especially those that are geographically closer to the countries of origin of refugees. This helps avoid overburdening and social tensions.
- Integration and diversity: by distributing refugees more widely, different countries can address the reception and integration of people of different cultural backgrounds and abilities. This promotes intercultural exchange and diversity in the EU.
Cons - What's against it?
- Sovereignty and national identity: the distribution of refugees should be the responsibility of each member state. Each country should have the right to make its own decisions regarding the reception of refugees and to preserve its national identity.
- Capacity and integration: not all countries have the same capacity and resources to adequately receive and integrate refugees. An inflexible quota system could lead to overburdened systems and lack of integration.
- Asylum procedures and security concerns: different asylum procedures and security standards in member countries could lead to inequalities in the treatment of refugees. It is important that countries can maintain their own procedures and standards to ensure the safety of their citizens.
