Electoral system

First Past the Post: The one in the lead takes it all.

Great Britain elects its House of Commons using the simplest principle in the world: 650 electoral districts, 650 winners. Whoever has even one more vote than the second-place candidate in their district wins a seat in Parliament. All other votes are wasted, regardless of whether they account for 49 or 5 percent. This 'First Past the Post' system often results in clear majorities.

Curious: A one-vote lead is enough for a parliamentary seat.

In 2017, Fiona Onasanya won her district by just 607 votes out of over 65,000 cast. Such nail-biting victories are possible because each district elects exactly one representative. The Liberal Democrats received 11.6 percent of the votes nationwide in 2019 but only secured 1.7 percent of the seats. The system favors regionally strong parties.

Tradition and Reform: Why little changes.

Since the 19th century, the British have been voting this way—with few changes. In 2011, 68 percent voted against a reform for a fairer system. The reason: the major parties benefit from the status quo. However, there have been minor reforms: since 2020, there are more electoral districts, and the boundaries are regularly adjusted to ensure districts are of equal size.
