Foundation and Background of the SDLP
The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) was founded in 1970 in Northern Ireland, among others by John Hume, a later Nobel Peace Prize laureate. It emerged during the so-called 'Troubles', a time of political and ethnic conflict in Northern Ireland. The SDLP positioned itself as a social democratic and Irish nationalist party that advocates for the reunification of Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland, but exclusively through peaceful and democratic means. Unlike other groups, the SDLP rejected any form of violence and promoted political solutions to end the conflict.
